Sapphire is a gemstone that can be found
in a variety of jewelry, including rings, pendants, bracelets, brooches, and earrings. Due
of its strong symbolism, it is frequently employed in the creation of many engagement rings.
It can be used as a primary stone or as a subsidiary stone, for example, to supplement
diamonds. Before use, sapphire can be heated to 1300° to enhance its color and clarity while
removing any impurities. This procedure is completely safe.
In terms of
production, sapphire is a stone that can only be discovered in certain geographical places.
It is mostly found in alluvial (secondary) deposits and is usually generated in metamorphic
or magmatic rocks. The main sapphire-extraction countries are in Southeast Asia (Sri Lanka,
Thailand, Cambodia, and Burma) and India (Kashmir). There are mines in Madagascar, China,
Australia, and the United States as well.
Sri
Lanka is one of the world's most prolific gem-producing locations. The island where the
sapphires are found is located approximately 100 kilometers south of Colombo. Numerous
stones are faceted on-site, frequently using crude methods.
Gemology
Treated Corundum
Is considered "treated" corundum, and must
thus be classified as such by the seller, any corundum that has undergone the input of
external chemical elements (Diffusion) during heating, such as beryllium for yellow and
orange sapphires or Titanium/Chromium for sapphires (blue). Similarly, the use of glass,
lead glass, any coloring resin, coating, or irradiation to conceal cracks by filling and/or
changing the color obligates the inclusion of the term " treatment ".
Fortunately, laboratory reports are available for many good grade colored sapphires and
sapphires; otherwise, a competent gemologist will be able to detect the treatments and guide
you to the most attractive stones and the best value for money.

With over ten years of marketing
experience, I finally decided to settle down in Bangkok to work in an area that I have
always been interested in: the gemstones industry. I'm still learning how the market works
on a daily basis, and I enjoy sharing my experience with those who are interested in
learning more about gems in general.
